July Manufacturing Employment Fell By 20,000
The manufacturing sector of the U.S. economy, after adding 15,000 jobs in June, likely lost 20,000 jobs in July, says Merrill Lynch & Co., New York, in advance of August 4’s U.S. Labor Department report on employment. Read more

Industry Sound, But Growing Less Rapidly
Harry Moser, president of Agie Charmilles Corp., says the U.S. economy is clearly reacting to high interest rates and oil prices. Tooling (molds, stamping dies and extrusion dies) appears to be holding up better than production, and if the recent weakening of the U.S. dollar continues and the Federal Reserve does not attempt to strengthen the dollar with higher interest rates, long-term manufacturing growth is likely.
